SaidOrSi built an audience by turning Shenzhen into homework Hong Kong people can copy. His 新手北上攻略 is still the gentlest on-ramp: one district, one payment app, one underground mall system you can walk for hours without melting.
The point of a first trip is not “seeing Shenzhen.” It’s proving documents, payments and metro gates all work before you bet a long-haul sleeper on them.
The take
- Carry a Home Return Permit. Hong Kong ID alone does not get you into the mainland.
- Pre-install AlipayHK, finish identity verification, bind a card or load balance in Hong Kong.
- First playground: Futian Convention & Exhibition Centre via Futian Port, then Shenzhen Metro Line 4 to 会展中心.
- Expect restaurant table QR ordering. Free shop Wi-Fi is fine if you have no mainland data yet.
- Treat the rebuilt Huanggang Port as a “know before you go” crossing. His 2026 walkthrough is not kind to it.
Before you leave Hong Kong
- Documents: Home Return Permit for every traveller, including kids.
- Payments: AlipayHK first — works at many tills even offline once the QR is showing. Optionally WeChat Pay HK. See the payments guide.
- Data: Hong Kong roaming pass, travel data eSIM, or a mainland SIM. Roaming often keeps WhatsApp / Google reachable; mainland SIMs usually don’t. See the eSIM guide.
- Apps offline: AlipayHK, maps (Amap / Baidu), WeChat, MTR / departure boards.
Crossing into Futian
SaidOrSi’s newbie route:
- East Rail to Lok Ma Chau (Futian Port), or light rail / bus from the northwest New Territories into the same port.
- After mainland immigration, escalators drop you toward Shenzhen Metro Line 4 — Futian Port station.
- Buy a single journey at the machine: Line 4 → 会展中心. He pays the machine with the AlipayHK payment QR even without data — one reason he likes that wallet for first-timers.
- Bags go through metro security before the gates.
Return tip: if you ride East Rail home, tap the MTR rebate machine inside the paid area at Futian Port before you exit. Possible fare discount. Free money is free money.
The Convention Centre underground spine
His walking script treats 连城新天地 / COCO Park / 领展中心城 / 皇庭 / 卓悦中心 as one air-conditioned graph linked to multiple metro stations and Futian HSR.
- Enter 领展中心城 from 连城新天地 near Exit B of 会展中心 — his usual first mall for strong AC and HK-friendly shops.
- Many restaurants print Wi-Fi passwords next to the order QR. Long-press WeChat → Scan if AlipayHK mini-programs are missing.
- If a canteen forces prepay inside a WeChat-only mini program that rejects AlipayHK, ask staff to key the order at the till, then pay with AlipayHK. He demonstrates that workaround on camera.
- Optional: China Telecom promo counters inside Landmark Centre have offered prepaid SIMs to Home Return Permit holders. Promotions change — ask. Don’t assume the 2024 “¥100 free credit” deal still exists. See the phone & bank guide.
- Hema (盒馬) inside some Futian malls is great for cooked seafood. Payment rules have flipped between mainland Alipay-only and AlipayHK — test before you fill a basket.
He has dozens of deeper mall episodes. Use those once the payment and metro muscles work.
Border reality check: new Huanggang
In 新皇崗口岸問題多多 (630k+ views), SaidOrSi’s 2026 visit is blunt: long pedestrian transfers, buses that jam, slow car hailing, and no duty-free in the form he expected. Use it when geography demands it, not as the default “easy” gate.
Futian, Shenzhen Bay, Liantang / Heung Yuen Wai and West Kowloon HSR each win for different origins. Match the port to your Hong Kong starting point and mainland destination — not to whichever video is trending. Faster e-Channel / “无感” lanes show up in his Luohu / Gongbei mall video when your credentials qualify; enrolment rules differ by document.
One-day sample loop
- Cross Futian Port mid-morning.
- Metro to 会展中心 → lunch in Landmark Centre.
- Walk 连城新天地 toward COCO Park or Joy City / Zhuoyue for afternoon shopping.
- Early dinner; metro back; East Rail rebate tap; home.
Luggage-heavy? Ride-hail — see the transport guide.
Packing micro-checklist
- Power bank and a dual USB cable — Shenzhen days are QR-heavy.
- A little RMB cash for taxis or stubborn tills.
- Screenshots of AlipayHK customer-service entry and your meetup address in simplified Chinese.
- Comfortable shoes. His Futian loop is mostly indoors, but port walks and metro transfers add distance.
Day goes well? Graduate to his themed episodes — roasted pigeon hunts, Chaozhou weekends, Jingdezhen HSR trips. First prove the boring bits work.
