Can you spend Hong Kong dollars in mainland China without opening a mainland bank account?
Yes — for most weekends. Not for every till.
Hong Kong YouTuber SaidOrSi (西DorSi) has spent years stress-testing wallets in Shenzhen and beyond. His answer is useful because it’s opinionated: start with AlipayHK, add WeChat Pay HK for the gaps, and only then bother with mainland Alipay. One wallet will not cover the country. Anyone selling that story is selling something else.
Coverage changes. Treat shop-level claims as field notes.
The take
- AlipayHK is the default. Broadest scan-to-pay coverage in his tests, and the payment QR can work offline once it’s on screen.
- WeChat Pay HK wins when the shop only opens inside a WeChat mini program — tea shops, some table QR menus, occasional rail flows.
- Mainland Alipay (支付宝) unlocked with a Home Return Permit + Hong Kong phone reaches scenes the HK wallets miss.
- Street taxis, some Guangdong WeChat-only canteens and membership apps like Hema still break things.
- Bring a little RMB cash anyway.
1. AlipayHK (blue) — start here
In AlipayHK北上全新功能 and 大陸用Alipayhk或Wechat pay HK畀錢攻略, SaidOrSi treats AlipayHK as the northbound workhorse:
- Flash your payment QR at any till that already takes mainland Alipay. He has done this in airplane mode — the code doesn’t need a live connection at that second. Reconnect within about a day so the app stays healthy.
- Scan the merchant’s code when they show an Alipay poster. That needs data or Wi-Fi.
- After identity verification you get transit codes, ride-hail, mini-program ordering and, in later builds, high-speed rail booking without a separate 12306 login fee. He says verification is available from age 12 — useful for school trips; confirm in the current app.
Settles in HKD at the day’s rate. In his testing, no foreign-transaction fee when a bank card funded it. Your card issuer may still charge — that’s their tax, not AlipayHK’s.
Where it dies: Guangdong tea shops that only live inside WeChat mini programs. Hema membership historically wanted mainland Alipay. Personal WeChat collection codes from stallholders get rejected as non-compliant.
2. WeChat Pay HK (green) — the mini-program key
Same WeChat app as the mainland wallet. Switch the wallet region to Hong Kong before you pay in HKD.
Coverage skews to chains that signed with Tencent — McDonald’s, KFC, Heytea, Nayuki in his examples. Tiny shops often shrug. Because payment rides the WeChat network, it can finish in-app checkouts AlipayHK can’t open, including some restaurant table QRs and, in one of his tests, 12306 tickets. Needs a network. Airplane mode will not save you.
Meituan cooperation has come and gone on his timeline. Don’t assume food delivery or shared bikes take WeChat Pay HK. Test before you depend on it.
3. Mainland Alipay without a mainland bank card
In 唔駛再搞大陸戶口, SaidOrSi documents the path a lot of people still miss:
- Install mainland 支付宝.
- Register with a +852 number.
- Real-name verify with a Home Return Permit and face scan — no mainland bank account required.
- Top up from AlipayHK remittance when that corridor accepts Home Return Permit payees (he has watched that rule flip on and off).
That combo reaches more “mainland-only” scenes: some 收錢吧 tills, Meituan when cards fail, Dianping / Douyin vouchers, power-bank rentals, apps that only bind mainland Alipay. A few Guangdong restaurants still demand mainland WeChat Pay. For near-total coverage he still wants a mainland bank account later — see the phone and bank guide.
Shanghai’s Alipay visitor guide confirms overseas users can register and link foreign cards — a backup if remittance is awkward.
What still breaks
| Scene | Usually works | Usually fails |
|---|---|---|
| Mall / supermarket scanning your code | AlipayHK, mainland Alipay | WeChat Pay HK at tiny shops |
| Table QR + mini-program (Guangdong) | WeChat Pay HK or mainland WeChat | AlipayHK alone |
| Street taxi hail | Cash / UnionPay / mainland wallets | Both HK wallets |
| Hema / some membership apps | Mainland Alipay | AlipayHK |
| 12306 in-app | WeChat Pay HK (in his test) | AlipayHK (at that time) |
Cash is still legal. Staff who claim they have no change are annoying, not a policy. A UnionPay debit card or Cloud QuickPass QR is a useful third rail if you have one.
Setup before you cross
- Install AlipayHK and WeChat, finish real-name steps in Hong Kong, bind a funding source.
- Optionally install mainland 支付宝, verify with your Home Return Permit, test a small AlipayHK top-up.
- Prefer live codes over screenshots of payment QRs.
- Keep a Hong Kong line that can receive SMS OTPs.
- HK wallets work farther afield than people fear — he’s paid with them in Fujian and Beijing — but some city transit QR systems want a mainland network path. A physical Shenzhen Tong or city transit card is the backup.
