Hong Kong “北上” shopping isn’t one discount. It’s three layers that stack.

App vouchers for meals and tickets. The national trade-in subsidy (國補) for phones and appliances. The departure tax refund (離境退稅) you claim at the border.

SaidOrSi (西DorSi) has spent years testing those layers in Shenzhen and Zhuhai. Several of his videos are sponsored by the payment brands on screen — AlipayHK, UnionPay, HSBC — so treat promo amounts as examples and the official rules as the part that lasts. The stacking math is still real.

The take

  • Meals, drinks, cinema, attractions: open Meituan before you order. He routinely sees 20–50% off menu prices; cinema tickets in one test ran about 60% of the box-office price.
  • Phones, tablets, watches, appliances: 2026 國補 takes 15% off the final price. Cap is ¥500 per digital item (phones, tablets, smartwatches/bands, smart glasses at ¥6,000 or less) and ¥1,500 per appliance — one item per category per person. Since July 2026, Hong Kong residents claim it in 雲閃付 with a Home Return Permit, Hong Kong number and Hong Kong UnionPay card.
  • Anything over ¥200 from one tax-refund shop on one day: claim the departure tax refund. Official rate is 11% on 13%-VAT goods; he nets about 9% in Guangdong after the agency fee. Keep goods sealed. Leave through a designated port within 90 days.
  • Stacking works — with a trap. Subsidised phones get unboxed at the till. Refund goods must stay unused. Ask the shop to reseal with official seal bags before you walk out.

Layer 1: Meituan group-buy vouchers

In 美團/大眾點評買團購券 and 用港紙買大陸團購券, SaidOrSi treats Meituan as the first app to open when he walks into a restaurant. His estimate: 70–80% of restaurants list vouchers.

Buy one:

  1. Install 美團 (Dianping shares the same owner; he prefers Meituan because it’s sometimes cheaper).
  2. Register with +852. Hong Kong numbers work now, but he still hits occasional blocks on +852 accounts — a mainland number is the safer long-term fix. See the phone and bank guide.
  3. Pay with a Hong Kong card in Meituan’s wallet, AlipayHK (supported in Meituan since 2025 — AlipayHK可以喺美團度用啦), WeChat Pay HK, or UnionPay via 雲閃付 / Apple Pay.
  4. Search the shop, tap 搶購, pay, show the QR to staff (核銷).

Three voucher types:

Type How it works Trap

Steal these habits:

  • Buy cash vouchers at the table once you know the bill. Some restaurants offer 一鍵買單: enter the amount, Meituan applies the voucher automatically.
  • Unused vouchers are usually refundable for free.
  • Screenshots work. A friend with a mainland number can buy and send you the QR.
  • Cinema (¥53 vs ¥85 at the counter in his test) and attraction tickets can be cheaper on Meituan. Some attractions sell only to mainland ID holders. If the ID field can change but has no Home Return Permit option, he picks passport and enters the permit number.
  • Douyin vouchers can be cheaper and harder for Hong Kong users to buy. He’s also watched Douyin-listed restaurants close within months. Meituan first.

Payment-side coupons stack on top when they’re live: AlipayHK’s Meituan zone (daily 10am grabs), BoC Pay’s e-CNY ¥50 Meituan red packet every two weeks (數字人民幣新玩法, Dec 2024), and a now-ended 2024 HSBC Mastercard cashback. Check AlipayHK’s Chill生活 → 北上 on the day you travel.

Layer 2: the 2026 national subsidy (國補)

SaidOrSi’s September 2026 video 76折買電子產品 冇內地戶口都可以用國補 covers the change that matters: you no longer need a mainland phone or bank card to claim 國補.

The Ministry of Commerce 2026 notice subsidises 15% of the final price after other discounts, one item per category per person:

UnionPay International’s July 2026 announcement lists 16 categories for Hong Kong and Macao residents across Guangdong, including robot vacuums, digital cameras and smart toilets. Runs to 31 December 2026 or until quotas run out. Guangzhou’s commerce bureau adds that phones above ¥6,000 can still get a separate ¥500 provincial subsidy there.

How he claims it:

  1. Install 雲閃付, register with your Hong Kong number, bind a Hong Kong-issued UnionPay card (PayMe UnionPay or HSBC dual-currency in his examples). Verify with Home Return Permit + face scan. If the account was previously tied to a mainland number, ask 雲閃付 support to unlink the permit details first.
  2. Open the consumer-voucher entry. Shenzhen: 深圳消費 → 以舊換新. Pick 家電數碼 for appliances or digital items under ¥6,000; the second option covers digital over ¥6,000. Elsewhere in Guangdong: 廣東消費券, locate your city.
  3. Pick the category (手機), fill details, sign your Chinese full name. Staff at 京東MALL Shenzhen and a big Zhuhai electronics chain walked shoppers through it.
  4. Pay with 雲閃付’s payment code. Subsidy comes off at the till. Invoice must be in your name.

His example: an Honor phone at ¥3,399 mainland (HK$4,299 in Hong Kong) fell to ¥2,899 after the ¥500 cap. Net ~9% tax refund takes another ~¥261 → roughly ¥2,640. Close to the “76折 vs Hong Kong” headline, depending on the exchange rate.

Caveats that matter: mainland Android often ships without Google Play and with ads you can kill. Mainland iPhones get dual physical SIM slots but no Apple Intelligence. Appliances may need plug and voltage checks for a Hong Kong flat. And subsidised items are unboxed on the spot for serial / IMEI registration — read the next section before you celebrate.

Layer 3: departure tax refund (離境退稅)

深圳退稅進階攻略+Q&A (Sept 2025) is the cleanest walkthrough. The State Taxation Administration’s 2025 rules and Shenzhen’s notice back the hard numbers.

Who qualifies: Hong Kong and Macao residents count as overseas visitors if they’ve stayed on the mainland ≤183 consecutive days. Day-trippers clear that easily.

Rules:

  • At least ¥200 at the same tax-refund shop on the same day (threshold cut from ¥500 in April 2025).
  • Goods unused, taken out by you, within 90 days.
  • Refund rate: 11% on 13%-VAT goods, 8% on 9%-VAT goods — both include the agent fee. He nets about 9% on most electronics in Guangdong.
  • Cash refunds allowed up to ¥20,000; larger amounts by bank transfer.
  • Excluded: VAT-exempt shop goods and restricted export items.

Where to buy: only registered 退稅商店. Not every branch of a brand qualifies. Apple Stores don’t offer the refund; some authorised resellers do. He found Uniqlo at Link CentralWalk eligible and another branch not — look for the “退稅商店” sign. AlipayHK’s 深圳離境退稅服務指南 and Shenzhen’s refund mini program map many of them. Shenzhen alone has over 1,000 refund shops.

Where to claim:

  • Shenzhen: Futian, Lo Wu, Man Kam To, Shenzhen Bay, Shekou cruise terminal, Bao’an airport (land ports roughly 09:00–21:00).
  • Zhuhai: Hong Kong–Zhuhai–Macao Bridge Zhuhai Port and Hengqin joined in July 2026 (Guangdong Tax).
  • No desk: Lok Ma Chau / Huanggang, Heung Yuen Wai / Liantang, West Kowloon. Cross there and you can’t claim.
  • Cars: at Shenzhen Bay and Man Kam To the desks sit in the passenger halls only. Vehicle lanes have none. A driver can’t claim for a passenger.

Standard refund — his preferred route:

  1. Pay at the refund shop (he likes AlipayHK for the rate). Hand over the Home Return Permit. Sign the form in the correct box — he watched someone get sent back to Huaqiangbei for signing the wrong place.
  2. At the port, clear mainland immigration first. Futian: refund room on the left before the bridge to the Hong Kong side. HZMB Zhuhai: customs check comes before immigration — go to customs first.
  3. Queue ticket → customs with the sealed goods → bank counter. Refund to a card, or to AlipayHK by scanning the desk QR. His weekday run took about 10 minutes. Weekends are busier.

即買即退 (instant refund): get the money at the mall against a credit-card pre-authorisation; customs releases it when you exit. He prefers the standard route: you still queue at the port, some malls force a credit card instead of AlipayHK, mall staff are slower, and the exit deadline is whatever you signed (he was told 17 days vs 90 for standard). Miss it and the advance gets clawed back (STA notice).

The sealing trap: refund goods must be unopened at customs; subsidised phones get unboxed at the till. Shenzhen’s 一單一包一碼 scheme seals each refund form’s goods in a tamper-evident bag with a QR. Stores can reseal after you check the phone. In Zhuhai, his store had no seal bags yet and let him carry the box out unopened, unbox in Hong Kong, then settle the subsidy difference — a store workaround, not a rule. Do not break the seal before customs.

Smaller wins

  • AlipayHK’s Chill生活 page has carried 5%-off coupons for Shenzhen and Zhuhai duty-free, plus small transport coupons for cross-border coaches and the HZMB toll.
  • UnionPay often runs Sam’s Club spend-and-save for Hong Kong cards — his March 2024 example was ¥100 off ¥1,000 (雲閃付).
  • Online: 北上免費自取淘寶/退貨 — send Taobao parcels to a 菜鳥驛站 or 豐巢 locker in Shenzhen. Skip consolidation shipping, keep the full 7-day no-reason return window. Lockers hold free for only 18 hours.

One stacked purchase

A phone from a Shenzhen mall store that is both a subsidy merchant and a tax-refund shop:

  1. Claim the 手機 subsidy in 雲閃付 before you cross.
  2. Pay with 雲閃付; ask for the 退稅單 and an official seal bag.
  3. Book lunch through a Meituan cash voucher paid with AlipayHK, using that day’s app coupon.
  4. Exit via Futian, not Lok Ma Chau. Claim the refund to AlipayHK.

Hong Kong side: personal electronics normally carry no duty inbound. Alcohol and tobacco limits still apply to everything else in the bag.
